His fine art work has been exhibited in galleries, private collections, and 41 exhibits, including 19 solo exhibits.  Steve has been a contributing editor to Outdoor Photographer, Camera & Darkroom, and PhotoWork magazines and has written columns, feature articles and interviews for View Camera, PIC, Shutterbug and Rangefinder magazines.  He was the co-founder and former editor of Photovision magazine and the editor of Focus Fine Art Photography magazine, issues #5 through #13.

His three books, The Darkroom Cookbook, The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, and The Film Developing Cookbook are all international photography bestsellers.  Photo-eye Books of Santa Fe named The Variable Contrast Printing Manual the best technical title of 1997.

From 1970 to 1977 Steve maintained a portrait and wedding studio in San Luis Obispo, California.  In 1977 he opened a commercial studio in Hollywood. His internationally known clientele included Vivian Woodward Cosmetics, Merle Norman Cosmetics, Jordache, IBM, Teledyne/Inet, Mitsubishi-Fudosan, and many others.  His specialty was photographing for "underground" L.A. fashion designers.  In 1984 he closed his studio to devote full time to his photography, teaching, and writing on photography.

He has conducted photographic and darkroom workshops since 1979, including workshops for Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Zone VI, Cape Cod and Tuscano Photographic Workshops, the Universities of California at Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Irvine, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Denver.  He has guest lectured on photography and fine art at Eastern Washington University, Spokane Falls College and Chapman College.  From 2004-2007 he has taught a special street photography workshop for the International Center of Photography in NYC.

From 1982 to 2005 Steve conducted the longest running workshop on figure photography in the world, The Nude at Big Sur.  A retrospective of his work on this subject, The Nude at Big Sur, was released in December 2002.

In 1999 Steve established The Photographers' Formulary Workshops in Montana and was the program director for the years 1999 and 2000.

Steve accepts commercial assignments and also licenses photographs for the advertising and publishing industries.  He currently has full lighting capabilities, access to studios in L.A., N.Y., Atlanta and Chicago, and can travel anywhere in the world for location assignments. Steve works in 35mm, medium and large formats, up to 8 x 10" view cameras, film or digital.
