Renowned for its festive, carnival atmosphere, the Rose Festival is a paradise for photographing the spontaneity
and rhythm of the street. The Portland Rose Festival was first held in 1907 so this year is going to be very
special. The city will be going all out.
Our street photography sessions will take place in and around the waterfront of Portland and will include one
or more of the following subjects: the Tall Ships; the Queen’s Coronation; the Dragon Boat Races; the
Centennial Ball. We have arranged for participants to receive press passes for the weekend which will
gain them entrance to these events.
Steve Anchell teaches a variety of techniques for photographing street subjects. From standing in a doorway
with a long lens to engaging your subject in conversation. Lessons will include, but not be limited to:
Which cameras and lenses work best; how to use a flash during the day for dramatic background effects;
pre-focusing; using digital; using film; copyrights; and street safety. You will be able to practice what
you have learned during the festival.
This workshop is a fun learning experience for all levels—beginning or advanced, amateur or professional.
This workshop is co-sponsored by Leica Camera. However, you are welcome to bring any camera you like
working with, digital or film.
